Immediate Breast Reconstruction Likelihood Studied

Younger women with breast cancer were more likely than older women to undergo immediate breast reconstruction (IBR), according to a study involving >320,000 individuals. Additionally, tumor grade and radiation therapy were differentially linked with the likelihood of immediate breast reconstruction across patient age. Participants underwent mastectomy over a 14-year period ending in 2014. Investigators estimated the effect of age on IBR, and looked at the impact of tumor grade and radiation therapy. Among the results:

~One-fourth of women underwent IBR.
Age was significantly linked with IBR.
Younger women were more likely to undergo reconstruction.
Tumor grade and radiation therapy altered the effect of age on IBR.
