Immediate Breast Reconstruction Likelihood Studied

Clin Breast Cancer; ePub 2017 Dec 6; Reddy, et al

Younger women with breast cancer were more likely than older women to undergo immediate breast reconstruction (IBR), according to a study involving >320,000 individuals. Additionally, tumor grade and radiation therapy were differentially linked with the likelihood of immediate breast reconstruction across patient age. Participants underwent mastectomy over a 14-year period ending in 2014. Investigators estimated the effect of age on IBR, and looked at the impact of tumor grade and radiation therapy. Among the results:

  • ~One-fourth of women underwent IBR.
  • Age was significantly linked with IBR.
  • Younger women were more likely to undergo reconstruction.
  • Tumor grade and radiation therapy altered the effect of age on IBR.
