Fibrinogen Concentrate Effective, Safe for Postop Bleeding

Key clinical point: Fibrinogen concentrate was comparable to cryoprecipitate for controlling excessive bleeding after cardiac surgery.

Major finding: The mean number of blood component units transfused within 24 hours of surgery was 16.3 for fibrinogen concentrate versus 17 for cryoprecipitate.

Study details: A randomized trial in 827 adults undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.

Disclosures: The trial was sponsored by Octapharma AG, which also provided fibrinogen concentrate. Cryoprecipitate was provided by the Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec. Dr. Callum reported receiving grants from Canadian Blood Services, Octapharma, and CSL Behring during the conduct of the study. Multiple coauthors had similar disclosures.
