Genetic variants may predict stroke in some adult SCD populations
Key clinical point: Oxidative stress–related genetic variants may identify adult sickle cell disease patients at risk of stroke.
Major finding: SOD2 Val16Ala polymorphism was independently associated with the risk of stroke (odds ratio: 1.98; P = .009).
Study details: A total of 499 unrelated patients with sickle cell anemia aged > 18 years were genotyped and reviewed for stroke incidence.
