Recommendations for GERD Management

Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol; ePub 2017 Aug 4; Gyawali, et al

The management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) should start with empiric proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in combination with lifestyle choices in patients without alarm symptoms, according to a recent review. Additional recommendations include:

  • Improving the therapeutic regimen by improving compliance and timing of PPI doses.
  • Increasing PPI doses to twice daily in certain patients to reduce persistent symptoms.
  • Endoscopy should be considered in patients who continue to have symptoms.
