Monitoring Progression from Barrett’s Esophagus
Am J Gastroenterol; ePub 2017 Apr 4; Krishnamoorthi, et al
Enlisting the assistance of 2 gastrointestinal pathologists can help clinicians monitor the progression of Barrett’s esophagus/low-grade dysplasia (BE/LGD) to high grade dysplasia/esophageal adenocarcinoma (HGD/EAC), suggests an analysis of a multicenter prospective BE registry. The analysis of 244 BE/LGD patients found:
- 56 patients received the diagnosis of HGD/EAC within 12 months.
- 14 patients progressed to HGD/EAC after 12 months.
- 29% of LGD patients were downgraded from LGD to a non-dysplastic state.
- The risk of progression to more serious conditions was substantially increased when the researchers brought in an additional panel of 2 expert pathologists to reconfirm LGD diagnoses.
