A Better Approach to Pediatric Eosinophilic Esophagitis
Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol; 2017 Nov; Kagalwalla, et al
A less restrictive elimination diet can help control eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in children, according to a recent clinical study that included 78 patients.
- In the past, a 6-food elimination regimen has proven effective in managing EoE in children and adults.
- The new investigation found that eliminating only 4 foods—cow’s milk, wheat, eggs, and soy—for 8 weeks produced histologic remission in 50 patients (64%).
- The mean clinical symptom score at the beginning of the experiment was 4.5 and decreased to 2.3 after 8 weeks (P<.001).
- Mean endoscopic score dropped from 2.1 to 1.3 (P<.001).
