Online Education Boosts PBC Understanding
Gastroenterology; 2017 Apr; Lubarda, et al
As new management options for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) become available, clinicians need a way to stay up to date on these new developments. A recent analysis of an educational initiative found that online case-based continuing medical education can increase physicians’ knowledge and competence in caring for this patient population. Among the findings of the new study:
- 128 gastroenterologists and 136 primary care physicians participated in the program.
- The program consisted of answering three relevant questions before and after the educational program.
- GI specialists significantly improved their knowledge and competence following CME.
- 1% of gastroenterologist participants answered all 3 questions correctly before the program.
- 55% answered all 3 questions correctly after the CME program.
- Among primary care physicians, the percentage increased from 1% to 43% after participating in the online program.
