IBD-Related Hospital Admissions Have Increased
Ann Surg; ePub 2017 Dec 11; Justiniano; et al
Despite the fact that biological therapy has improved clinical outcomes in patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the number of unscheduled inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-related hospital admissions has increased for both diseases, according to an analysis of records from New York’s Statewide Planning & Research Cooperative System. Investigators compared statistics from 2000 to 2006 with 2007 to 2013 and found:
- Unscheduled IBD-related admissions jumped by 50% in ulcerative colitis patients and 41% in patients with Crohn’s disease.
- Among >15,000 patients who had intestinal resections, there was no change in the proportion of nonelective surgery cases.
- Mortality rates for nonelective surgery between the 2 time periods, however, did increase for ulcerative colitis—from 10.2% to 15%.
- There was a drop in mortality rates for Crohn’s disease in the same time span—3.3% vs 2.2%.
