Crohn’s Disease Surgeries May Be Declining

Am J Gastroenterol; 2017 Dec; Ma, et al

Fewer surgeries are being done to manage Crohn’s disease, suggests a recent Canadian study, but there’s been a shift from emergent to elective operations over the years.

  • A population-based analysis that looked at ICD-10 codes for surgical resections from fiscal years 2002 to 2012 identified 981 adults who had the procedure done to treat Crohn’s disease.
  • In this time frame, the overall surgical resection rate was 3.8 per 100 persons-years.
  • The overall surgical rate decreased by 3.5% per year as a result of a drop in emergency procedures, which declined by 10.1% per year.
  • Elective surgeries, on the other hand, increased by 3.7% per year.
