Comparing Stents to Stoma After Bowel Obstruction
JAMA Surg; ePub 2017 Jan 11; Abelson, et al
Among patients with a malignant large-bowel obstruction, it is safe to perform palliative emergency stenting, and the procedure can improve the efficiency of care, according to an observational study of 345 patients admitted to the hospital for colorectal cancer complications. When researchers compared 90 male patients in the stent group to 87 men in a group that had a stoma created, they obtained the following results:
- Stented patients were less likely to have a prolonged length of stay and had similar or fewer complications.
- More stented patients were discharged to their usual residence.
- Stented and stoma patients had approximately the same 90-day and 1-year hospital readmission rates.
