FIT for CRC Screening in a Minority Population
J Clin Gastroenterol; ePub 2018 Sep 15; Ramai, et al
In an urban minority population, fecal immunochemical test (FIT) use for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening remains suboptimal, according to a recent study. The retrospective study included 1,500 FIT kits that were mailed or handed to eligible participants in Brooklyn, NY from January 2014 to December 2016. Eligibility criteria included increased risk for colon cancer, uninsured or underinsured, and a minimum age of 50 years to warrant CRC screening. Researchers found:
- 1,367 Cancer Services Participants met study criteria; most were female and minority and average aged 59 years.
- ~50% of all participants returned their FIT kit.
- Area poverty and individual predictors were associated with low screening uptake.
- Geospatial mapping showed clusters of low screening uptake in areas of high poverty.
