Measuring EUS and ERCP Training Efforts
Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol; 2017 Nov; Wani, et al
Learning how to perform endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is challenging; creating a centralized database can help educators evaluate trainee performance against their peers according to a recent multicenter study that looked at trainee learning curves.
- 20 training programs and 22 advanced endoscopy trainees were involved in the study.
- By the end of their training, a median of 300 EUS and 350 ERCP procedures had been performed.
- Investigators graded over 3,700 exams and found substantial variability in trainees’ technical/cognitive skills; results were then shared with all programs.
- 82% of trainees achieved technical competence in EUS.
- 60% achieved technical competence in ERCP.
