Gastroenterology; ePub 2017 Jul 21; Pergolini, et al
The risk of developing cancer among patients with branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (BD-IPMNs) is minimal if their cyst remains 1.5 cm or smaller for more than 5 years, according to a retrospective analysis of 577 patients evaluated at Massachusetts General Hospital. Details of the investigation include the following:
- After 5 years, malignancies occurred in 5.5% of patients.
- Invasive cancers occurred in 4.4%.
- Among the 108 patients with cysts 1.5 cm or smaller after more than 5 years of follow-up, only 1 had ductal adenocarcinoma (0.9%).
- In patients with cysts larger than 1.5 cm, 7.5% developed a malignancy.
