Disposable Transnasal Capsule Endoscopy for BE Screening

Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol; ePub 2018 Aug 3; Sami, et al

Screening for Barrett’s esophagus (BE) with a clinic-based, single use transnasal capsule endoscope (EG Scan II) is safe compared to conventional esophagogastroduodenoscopy (C-EGD) and can detect BE with higher than 90% sensitivity and specificity, a recent study found. Researchers performed a multicenter cohort study with and without BE from 3 referral centers. Of 200 consenting participants, 178 (89%) completed both procedures on the same day and completed preference and validated tolerability questionnaires within 14 days. Researchers found:

  • A higher proportion of patients preferred the EG Scan s the C-EGD (54.2% vs 16.7%) and the EG Scan had a higher visual analogue scale (VAS) score vs the C-EGD.
  • The EG Scan identified any length BE with a sensitivity value of 0.90 and a specificity value of 0.91.
  • The EG Scan also identified long segment BE with a sensitivity value of 0.95 and short segment BE with a sensitivity value of 0.87.
  • There were no serious adverse events.
