Subclinical hypothyroidism appears common in women with miscarriage

Key clinical point: Whether asymptomatic patients should be screened for mild subclinical hypothyroidism or thyroid peroxidase antibodies remains an open question.

Major finding: Among women with a history of miscarriage or subfertility, the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism is about 20% when using a thyroid-stimulating hormone cutoff of 2.5 mIU/L.

Study details: A prospective, observational study of more than 19,200 women at 49 hospitals in the United Kingdom.

Disclosures: The study was linked to the Thyroid Antibodies and Levothyroxine trial, which was funded by the National Institute for Health Research. The researchers had no relevant conflicts of interest.
