Macrolides early in pregnancy linked to greater malformation risk

Key clinical point: Prenatal exposure to macrolides is linked to a higher risk of malformations than penicillin exposure.

Major finding: Risk of malformation at birth was 1.6 times greater in children with macrolides exposure versus penicillin exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Study details: The findings are based on an observational study of 104,606 U.K. children born from 1990 to 2016 whose mothers were prescribed macrolides or penicillin during pregnancy.

Disclosures: The research was funded by Child Health Research CIO Trust, the China Scholarship Council, Health Data Research UK, and the National Institute for Health Research. Dr. Fan and associates had no industry disclosures.
