Large study finds no link between gluten, IBD risk

Key clinical point: Consumption of dietary gluten was not associated with the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease.

Major finding: The finding spanned subgroups stratified by age, body mass index, smoking status, and whether individuals primarily consumed refined or whole grains.

Study details: Combined analyses of the Nurses Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II. After abstract submission, the study was expanded to include data from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, for a final pooled cohort of more than 208,000 women and men followed for more than 20 years.
