Kratom: Botanical with opiate-like effects increasingly blamed for liver injury
Key clinical point: Kratom, a botanical product with opioid-like activity, is increasingly responsible for cases of liver injury in the United States.
Major finding: In 2018, there were five cases of liver injury associated with products containing kratom (Mitragyna speciose), compared with one case in 2016.
Study details: A post hoc analysis of 404 cases of herbal and dietary supplement-associated liver injury from the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network prospective study.
