Metformin use linked to improved surgery outcomes

Key clinical point: Preoperative metformin may be associated with reduced postoperative mortality and readmission in patients with diabetes who undergo surgery.

Major finding: The 90-day, postsurgery mortality hazard was reduced by 28% in the metformin prescription recipients, compared with controls (HR, 0.72).

Study details: A retrospective cohort study of 10,088 surgery patients with diabetes.
