Patients find CAC more persuasive than ASCVD risk score for statin decisions
Key clinical point: Patients find a high coronary artery calcium score more believable than the results of the Pooled Cohort Equations Risk Calculator.
Major finding: Patients were twice as likely to initiate statin therapy for primary cardiovascular prevention if the recommendation was based on a coronary artery calcium score rather than the Pooled Cohort Equations Risk Calculator.
Study details: The CorCal Vanguard study was a primary cardiovascular prevention trial including 601 patients randomized to the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Pooled Cohort Equations or coronary artery calcium score as the basis for making a recommendation for initiation of statin therapy.
Disclosures: The presenter reported having no financial conflicts regarding the CorCal study, funded by a grant from the Dell Loy Hansen Cardiovascular Research Fund.
