Cost of ACHIEVE-ing Weight Loss Using This Intervention

Obesity; ePub 2017 Apr 11; Janssen, Jerome, et al

The costs of implementing an 18-month weight loss intervention were similar to costs of other programs, according to a study involving 144 individuals.

Investigators looked at costs incurred by a community psychiatric rehabilitation program that offered the intervention, called ACHIEVE. Among the results:

  • Participants lost an average of 3.4 kg.
  • The intervention cost $95/participant/month and $501/kg lost.
  • Costs ranged from $402-$725/kg lost.

Using expert-informed sensitivity analysis, the authors concluded that rehabilitation programs could implement the intervention for an estimated cost of $68-$85/client/month.
