This Can Reduce Eating Disorder Risk in Children
Obesity; ePub 2017 Oct 6; Balantekin, Hayes, et al
Family-based behavioral weight loss treatment reduced eating disorder risk in a study involving 241 children. Participants answered questions about emotional eating, shape/weight/eating concerns, restraint, and loss of control. They then took part in 16 sessions of family-based treatment. Among the results:
- 4 patterns were seen: low eating disorder pathology, shape and weight concerns, loss of control, and high eating disorder pathology.
- Shape and weight concerns decreased across treatment, with the highest decreases in patterns characterized by high shape and weight concerns.
- While all groups experienced significant decreases in zBMI, children with the highest eating disorder pathology did not achieve meaningful weight loss.
