Severe Hypoglycemia Risk in T2D After CV Event

Diabetes Care; ePub 2018, Jan 8; Strandl, et al

People with type 2 diabetes are more apt to experience severe hypoglycemia after a cardiovascular (CV) event, and vice versa, according to a study involving nearly 14,700 individuals. Participants from the TECOS study had type 2 diabetes and CV disease. Investigators followed them for a median of 3 years, looking at the link between severe hypoglycemia and a CV composite of fatal/nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke, hospitalization for unstable angina, or hospitalization for heart failure.

After adjusting for certain variables, patients with severe hypoglycemic events were:

  • 55% more likely to experience the CV composite.
  • 83% more likely to experience all-cause death.
  • 72% more likely to experience CV death.

Additionally, a higher risk of severe hypoglycemic events was seen in patient with:

  • Nonfatal MI: >3 times higher.
  • Nonfatal stroke: nearly 3 times higher.
  • Heart failure: nearly 4 times higher.
