A Rarity, but These T2D Patients Had Lower CVD Risk

Diabetes Care; ePub 2016 Mar 29; Wong, et al

It is rare that ideal levels of BP, LDL-C, and HbA1c occur together in people with diabetes, but when it happens it can dramatically lower the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to a study involving 2,018 individuals.

Participants were from 3 studies: ARIC, MESA, and JHS. Investigators examined cardiovascular risk factors over an average of 11 years. Among the results:

• Between 32% and 42% (depending on the study) were at target levels for BP, LDL-C, and HbA1c.

• The range was wider for those at target for any 1 or more factors: ~41% (ARIC), ~27% (MESA), and ~7% (JHS).

• Those at target levels for 1 factor had a 17% (ARIC), 33% (MESA), or 37% (JHS) lower risk of CVD; and a 17% (ARIC), 41% (MESA), or 36% (JHS) lower risk of CHD.

• Those with 1 or more factors at target levels had between 35% and 62% lower adjusted risk of CVD events, as well as between 41% and 60% lower adjusted risk of CHD events.
