This Predicts MI, CV Death in People with Diabetes
Diabetes Care; 2018 Jan 30; Hunt, Jaffa, et al
High levels of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) appear to predict myocardial infarction (MI) and cardiovascular (CV) death in people with type 2 diabetes, according to a study involving 952 individuals. Participants were from the Veterans Affairs Diabetes Trial. Investigators measured CTGF a median of ~2 years after the study began, and followed patients for an average of ~3 years, looking at vascular outcomes. Among the results:
- 5% had an MI.
- 7% had an MI- or CV-related death.
- After adjusting for certain variables, patients with higher levels of CTGF had a >2-fold elevated risk of MI, vs those with undetectable levels.
They had a nearly 3-fold higher risk of both MI/CV death and all-cause mortality.
