Predicting Bariatric Surgery’s Ability to Cure T2D

JAMA Surg; ePub 2016 Apr 20; Wood, et al

Data from electronic health records might help predict patients in whom bariatric surgery will result in remission of type 2 diabetes, according to an analysis involving 407 individuals.

Participants—three-fourths of whom were female—averaged ~51 years of age. Investigators reviewed their EHR records up to 8 years following Roux-en-y gastric bypass. They looked at DiaRem score (calculated based on age, HBA1C level, diabetes drugs used, and treatment with insulin) and extent of diabetes remission per ADA criteria. Among the results:

• 144 experienced 1 or more years of complete remission.

• 97 had partial remission lasting at least 1 year.

• 102 had prolonged partial remission.

• Remission occurred in 83.

The authors concluded that this approach can be used to improve the precision of care delivery.
