No Summer Vacation from Type 1 Diabetes

Adequate HbA1c levels were not achieved in most children and teens with type 1 diabetes regardless of time of year targeted, according to a study involving nearly 2,000 youths.

Participants were between 8 and 18 years of age and had type 1 diabetes. Investigators looked at HbA1c measures taken prior to summer, end of summer vacation, and once back in school. Among the results:

  • No difference in HbA1c was seen before, during, or after summer vacation (8.5% in all periods).
  • There were no differences after looking at groupings according to age, sex, race/ethnicity, region, and device use.
  • Only ~one-fourth had an HbA1c of 7.5% in each time period.

The authors noted that their findings run counter to conventional thought that summer activity and meal habit changes cause worsening control in children with type 1 diabetes.
