Diabetes Care; ePub 2017 May 12; Ely, Gruss, et al
The National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) gained wide implementation and appeared to be successful during the first 4 years of its existence, according to a study involving nearly 15,000 individuals.
Investigators analyzed data provided by participants who signed up for DPP program interventions that lasted a year. They looked at attendance, weight, and physical activity time, as well as weight loss predictors. Among the results:
- Participants attended a median of 14 sessions over an average of 172 days.
- Overall, 36% achieved the 5% weight loss goal.
- Average weight loss was 4.2%.
- Participants reported an average of 152 minutes of physical activity weekly.
- ~42% met the physical activity goal of 150 minutes weekly.
- Participants lost 0.3% of body weight for every additional session attended, as well as for every 30 minutes of activity.
