Glycemic Variability and Microvascular Outcomes in T1D

Diabetes Care; ePub 2017 Apr 12; Lachin, et al

Glycemic variability within the same day does not seem to impact the development of microvascular complications in type 1 diabetes, according to a recent study.

Investigators looked at the link between glucose variability and the development and progression of retinopathy, nephropathy, and cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy during the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial. Among the results:

  • After adjusting for average blood glucose levels, no measure of within-day variability was linked with any outcome.
  • Only the longitudinal mean M-value (over time) was significantly linked with microalbuminuria when adjusted for the longitudinal average blood glucose and corrected for multiple tests using the Holm procedure.
