Smoking History Affects Skin Manifestations of SLE

Key clinical point: The more extensive an SLE patient’s smoking history, the greater the likelihood of chronic/irreversible skin manifestations.

Major finding: Patients with even a modest smoking history of less than five pack-years were ninefold more likely than never smokers to develop any mucocutaneous manifestations of SLE.

Study details: This was a retrospective single-center study of the health records of 632 consecutive patients with SLE.
