Differences Between Adult and Adolescent Acne

J Am Acad Dermatol; 2016 May; Rocha, et al

Recent studies show an increased prevalence of acne in adult women. These females are mostly normoandrogenic, and present with clinical differences when compared with those who have adolescent acne, according to a recent review.

The authors note that in adult acne, local glandular metabolism converts hormonal precursors to more active ones, which increase sebum production. This converts these areas, which are more prone to colonization by P acnes.

Toll-like receptor 2 expressed by inflammatory cells serves a critical role in the innate immune response to this bacterium.
