Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common disease that is becoming an epidemic in the United States. Diabetes can result in both microvascular and macrovascular complications. The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) revealed that tight control of blood glucose may help prevent the microvascular complications of diabetes.1
