Tobacco Smoke & Incident Fibroids Risk

There was an increased risk of late diagnosis incident fibroids in midlife in women undergoing menopausal transition and exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). This according the 13-year prospective Study of Women’s Health across the Nation (SWAN) that included a multiracial/ethnic cohort of 2,575 women aged 42 to 52 years at baseline and undergoing menopausal transition. Researchers found:
• Women exposed to ETS ≥1 person-hour per week had 1.28 times the adjusted odds of incident fibroids in the ensuing year vs those that were unexposed.
• Odds were elevated in never smokers (adjusted OR, 1.34) and former smokers (aOR, 2.57).
