Can Estrogen Exposure Inhibit PNET Growth?

Estrogen exposure appeared to inhibit pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (PNET) growth in women with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, according to a retrospective chart review involving 141 individuals.

Investigators estimated estrogen exposure using measures of cumulative estrogen exposure time (CEET), parity, live birth pregnancies, and bilateral oophorectomy. Among the results:

  • There was no significant link between CEET and time to PNET diagnosis.
  • When analyzing the correlation between estrogen exposure and PNET type, size, numbers, distant metastasis, lymph node metastasis, lymphovascular invasion, American Joint Committee on Cancer stage, and overall survival, only CEET correlated with PNET size.
