Nonpharmacologic interventions recommended for behavioral disturbances in dementia
Key clinical point: Among patients with dementia and behavioral disturbances, nonpharmacologic interventions – ecobiopsychosocial approaches that target the patient, caregiver, and environment—are recommended first-line measures.
Major finding: Three scenarios may warrant the consideration of pharmacologic treatment as first-line therapy: major depressive disorder with or without suicidal ideation, psychosis causing harm or potential for harm, and aggression with risk to self or others.
