Health and Human Services Takes Action on IOM Epilepsy Report

Author and Disclosure Information

“HRSA has been a key agency in advancing the whole concept of patient-centered medical homes,” which, unlike the traditional fee-for-service model of health care, take a team-based approach to treating patients, Dr. Koh pointed out.

To improve outcomes, patients should be at the center of these teams’ efforts so that they receive coordinated care that is tracked through electronic medical records, he added.

NINDS is on board too, issuing grants to study the effects of diet on epilepsy and whether it is safe to take epilepsy drugs during pregnancy, among other research concerns, Dr. Koh said.
