Opioid Use Associated with Common Bile Duct Dilation

Key clinical point: Bile duct dilation with normal bilirubin levels was more common among opioid users, and only weakly age associated.

Major finding: About 84% of patients who used opioids had an enlarged common bile duct, compared with 27% of nonopioid users (P less than .001).

Study details: A retrospective cohort study of 818 opioid users and 867 nonopioid users with normal bilirubin levels who had biliary duct dilation as identified by emergency department CT or MRI.
