New COPD Subtypes Help Refine Risk
Key clinical point: By combining forms of information from CT, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can be classed into 10 disease subtypes with distinct risk profiles.
Major finding: The 5-year mortality was highest among the three subtypes with moderate to severe centrilobular emphysema (P less than .01).
Study details: The investigators used data from the COPDGene study, a longitudinal observational cohort of about 10,000 smokers.
Disclosures: The study was supported by National Institute of Health grants, while three coauthors reported financial conflicts of interest.
