Increased sudden death risk in HIV linked to cardiac fibrosis
Key clinical point: At least in people with HIV, extensive cardiac fibrosis might be enough to implant a cardiac defibrillator.
Major finding: After adjustment for age, gender, and heart disease, HIV sudden cardiac death cases had a 60% higher burden of interstitial cardiac fibrosis than did sudden death cases in the general public.
Study details: Autopsies of hundreds of sudden cardiac death patients in San Francisco
