Dyspepsia Common in Gastroesophageal Reflux Patients
Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol; 2018 Jan; Eusebi, et al
The odds of patients with the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux also having dyspepsia are quite high, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis that included >111,000 patients. Among the details:
- The prevalence of dyspepsia among patients who reported weekly gastroesophageal reflux symptoms (GERS) was 43.9%.
- The odds of a person with weekly symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux having dyspepsia were about 7 times greater than it occurring in a person without GERS.
- The overlap between GERS and dyspepsia was >25%.
- Researchers speculated that shared pathophysiological mechanisms may explain the overlap.
