Parkinson’s disease affects an estimated 110,000 veterans, yet only 22% of this population uses VHA resources.^17,18 Veterans with Parkinson’s disease often experience comorbid mental health issues and have increased rates of mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders, as well as die by suicide.¹⁹ Certain risk factors for veterans have been linked to Parkinson’s disease, such as TBI and environmental exposures like Agent Orange.^20,21 Further research is needed to fully delineate the effects of Parkinson’s disease in veterans.
