Nicotine replacement therapy beats varenicline for smokers with OUD
Key clinical point: Smoking cessation with nicotine replacement vs. varenicline results in less drug use among patients with opioid use disorder.
Major finding: Patients with opioid use disorder had 16.5 drug use days if they used varenicline, compared with 0.13 if they used nicotine replacement therapy at 4-6 months follow-up (P less than .026).
Study details: The findings are based on a randomized, controlled trial of 47 smokers with OUD and 90 smokers without OUD in a smoking cessation program.
