Healthy Diet’s Impact on Hypertension in GDM

Women with a history of gestational diabetes who ate a healthy diet had a lower risk of developing hypertension, according to a prospective cohort study involving more than 3,800 women.
Participants were from the Nurses’ Health Study II and also a part of the Diabetes & Women’s Health Study. Investigators followed them over a 22-year period. They identified hypertension via questionnaire, and looked at scores for the alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) 2010, the alternative Mediterranean diet, and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH).
1,069 patients developed hypertension. After adjusting for risk factors, scores on all 3 dietary measures were inversely linked with risk of hypertension. Specifically, those scored via:
• AHEI had a 24% lower risk.
• DASH had a 30% lower risk.
• Mediterranean diet had a 42% lower risk.
