Exercise and Metabolic Parameters
If it doesn’t improve CV fitness, is it worth it?
Exercise training can lead to significant improvement in metabolic parameters even if it does not improve cardiorespiratory fitness, according to a randomized study of patients with type 2 diabetes.
A total of 202 subjects from the HART-D trial were randomized to one of three fitness groups or a control group. Their average age was 57, and 65% were women.
Those who exercised saw significant improvement in HbA1c levels, adiposity, and weight circumference. This was achieved whether they experienced improved cardiovascular fitness or not. Researchers observed no significant differences in the degree of change in the parameters between fitness responders and nonresponders.
Meanwhile, those in the control group had no significant changes in any of the parameters.
