Diabetes Patients Vaccination Levels Fall Short
Study sees no adherence with one type in particular
Many individuals at high risk for infection and complications from infectious diseases because of diabetes are not being vaccinated. Adherence to Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices (ACIP) recommendations were found to be below national coverage estimates in a single-center, cross-sectional study.
The trial included 100 participants who had diabetes. Thirty-nine of them were considered appropriate candidates for the hepatitis B vaccine; none had been vaccinated. Adherence rates for the influenza vaccine was 41% (less than previous estimates of 47%), and 37% for the pneumococcal vaccine (which matched previous estimates).
Immunization rates for all three vaccines fell short of targets set by Healthy People 20/20. Investigators called for allocating resources to expand coverage, and urged for particular vigilance regarding the hepatitis B vaccine.
