Recognizing and Managing Lead and Mercury Poisonings

Though heavy metal toxicity is relatively uncommon in patients presenting to urgent care centers, these poisonings can cause potentially fatal complications if they are not recognized and treated appropriately. This article summarizes the epidemiology and clinical aspects of lead and mercury exposure (two of the most likely causes of heavy metal toxicity, after iron) and proposes guidelines for detoxification.
