Evaluation and Management of Diarrhea in the ED

Author and Disclosure Information

Diarrhea is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, which is why this common symptom is a cause for concern and requires careful evaluation. A detailed patient history and physical exam may uncover red flags that warrant further workup and require pharmacologic treatment. Although most cases are self-resolving, differentiating between potentially serious and self-limited illnesses in a timely manner may prevent increased morbidity and mortality.
